About Demineralization (DM)
Demineralization is a water treatment process used to remove dissolved salts, minerals, and ions from water. The process works on the principle of ion exchange, where cation and anion resins remove positively and negatively charged ions present in water.
In DM systems, hydrogen form cation resin (H⁺ form) is used to exchange positive ions, while hydroxide form anion resin (OH⁻ form) removes negative ions from the water.
DM systems are generally used where very low conductivity water is required. With proper system design and polishing, conductivity levels of less than 1 µS/cm can be achieved.
Ion Exchange Reactions in Demineralization Process are
Cation Exchange Reaction (Hydrogen Form Resin)
The hydrogen form cation resin exchanges hydrogen ions (H⁺) with dissolved positive ions such as calcium and magnesium:

Anion Exchange Reaction (Hydroxide Form Resin)
2R–OH + SO₄²⁻ → R₂SO₄ + 2OH⁻
The hydrogen ions (H⁺) and hydroxide ions (OH⁻) released during the process combine to form pure water:
DM Plant Process
A typical DM system consists of the following stages :
Mixed Bed (MB)
A Mixed Bed system consists of a single vessel where both cation and anion exchange resins are mixed together. The cation resin used is in hydrogen form (H⁺ form) and the anion resin is in hydroxide form (OH⁻ form).
This arrangement provides very high ion exchange efficiency and is generally used as a polishing unit after the DM plant. Mixed Bed units help achieve very low conductivity levels, typically less than 1 µS/cm, making the water suitable for high purity applications.
Ion Exchange Reactions in Mixed Bed
R–H + Na⁺ → R–Na + H⁺
R–OH + Cl⁻ → R–Cl + OH⁻
H⁺ + OH⁻ → H₂O

Applications
Operation and Maintenance
Regeneration of ion exchange resins is required after a certain operating cycle to restore their ion removal capacity. Bluemaarlin provides proper SOPs for regeneration calculations and system operation to ensure efficient plant performance and easy maintenance.
